CompliSpace Appoints Former Royal Commission Senior Manager as its Head of Child Protection

Sydney, Australia – August 24, 2018 – CompliSpace Pty Ltd, a technology-enabled consulting company specialising in simplifying governance, risk, compliance and policy management for non-government schools in Australia today announced the appointment of Deborah de Fina as its new Head of Child Protection.

Deborah recently completed five years working with the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse where she assisted the Royal Commission to establish the Private Session process and subsequently managed its legal aspects. Through Private Sessions, the Royal Commission spoke with more than 8000 survivors of child sexual abuse.  Deborah managed and championed the process by which Private Sessions information was embedded throughout the Royal Commission’s work in determining and shaping public hearings, in informing the policies and recommendations of the Interim and Final Reports, and in providing examples and narratives for the Final Report.

Prior to working with the Royal Commission, Deborah had her own successful consulting practice where she specialised in the statutory child protection system, legal issues facing children and vulnerable people, and legal aid. She also spent more than nine years at Legal Aid NSW, as a child protection solicitor, Senior Solicitor and then Solicitor in Charge, Child Protection.

Deborah holds a Juris Doctorate from the Columbia University School of Law, a Master of International Affairs from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs and a Diploma in Law from Sydney University.

“Developing a child safe culture is at the heart of the Royal Commission Recommendations. In order to do that child services organisations need, not only documented policies and procedures that are compliant with a multitude of ever-changing laws, but also the tools to bring these policies to life on a daily basis.  Having developed cultural-based child protection programs for schools and education authorities around Australia, we are currently working to update our child protection programs to the Royal Commission Child Safe Standards as well as the draft Catholic Professional Standards. Deborah’s expertise will be an invaluable part of that work and the conversation we have with our clients across Australia,” said James Field, CEO of CompliSpace.

Deborah adds, “I am excited to bring my experience and expertise to a company that is committed to helping schools and other child services organisations keep children safe.  The opportunity to immediately work with over 600 schools across Australia, that service over half a million students, is enticing given the harrowing stories I heard during my Royal Commission work.  Child protection programs can’t operate in a vacuum and I strongly believe that high standards of governance and effective risk management practices are key to building a robust child safe culture so that school leaders, parents and children sleep better at night.”

GO1.com Top of the Class with CompliSpace School Training Deal

Brisbane, Australia – 26 January 2018 – GO1.com, the world’s largest onboarding, compliance and professional development platform, has sealed a deal with CompliSpace, a leading provider of governance, risk and compliance learning, that will expand GO1.com’s user base by more than 50,000 users and position it as a leading player in the school training space.

Under the agreement, over 20% of non-government schools across Australia will have access to GO1.com’s powerful training platform. This makes it easier for teachers and school administrators to maintain compliance policies and procedures in-line with legal requirements, provide access to teacher development courses and maintain records on training topics like child protection.

CompliSpace is a leading provider of Governance, Risk and Compliance and Policy Management programs, training and consulting. Its content and GRC platforms help organisations establish and follow policies and procedures in accordance with legal requirements. CompliSpace helps organisations across the education, financial, not-for-profit and commercial sectors, including over 20% of non-government schools and 25 education authorities in every state and territory.

The major appeal for CompliSpace is how GO1.com’s platform lets teachers access content anytime, anywhere via mobile and desktop, as well as helping schools to maintain records on important topics like child protection, workplace safety, student duty of care and privacy. CompliSpace Child Protection Programs help to protect around 500,000 Australian students and the Go1 platform will help embed understanding of those policies and procedures among teachers, staff and volunteers.

Andrew Barnes, CEO and co-founder, GO1.com, said technology plays a vital role in the school sector.

“Education has always been something that is close to my heart. I’m working in the edtech space and my wife is also a primary school teacher. Being able to partner with CompliSpace means we can help more schools access some of the best content available to them. The school market is a place where helping teachers and education administrators can have a really big impact. We’re excited to play a part in helping them do their role in educating the next generation of Australians,” Andrew Barnes says.

In the past six months, GO1.com has increased its user base from 100,000 to 600,000, and now offers over 150,000 courses. The online learning and training marketplace also hosts over a quarter of a million learning assets, from videos to quizzes.

Mr Barnes’ former school, Cannon Hill Anglican College in Queensland, is one of the 600-plus schools that will initially benefit from the partnership. Vice-principal Gary O’Brien said it will make compliance and professional development much easier.

“As deputy principal I have a focus on leadership and management. One area of this is to make sure that the school stays on top of compliance. Using GO1 will help replace paper based and manual processes, giving us peace-of-mind to know that everything is updated automatically and we don’t have to worry about staying abreast of every legal change. We will be able to replace spreadsheets through the platform and our teachers will now be able to access all their training needs on their mobiles whenever they need. It’s a huge step forward. But most importantly, it’s our students who ultimately end up benefiting,” Mr O’Brien said.

James Field co-founded CompliSpace with David Griffiths when they saw significant inefficiencies in the way schools and other sectors were trying to manage their legal and regulatory obligations.

“The legal and regulatory environment within which schools operate is incredibly complex, particularly with the ongoing changes to child protection legislation around Australia.  We work with schools to ensure that their policies and procedures are maintained up to date with current laws, however policies on their own are not enough.  Introducing the Go1 platform will assist our clients to bring their policies to life and affect cultural change, which now more than ever is central to achieving compliance and managing risk.”

Mr. Field said.

GO1.com will continue to help teachers and school administrators connect with the best content on soft skills, leadership training and instruction to help them do their role in educating the next generation of Australians. Over the next 12 months it’s estimated that GO1.com will grow its market share in the school training space by an additional ten per cent.

CompliSpace Accelerates Growth with Opening of New Office in Brisbane

Sydney, NSW – August 15, 2017 – CompliSpace Pty Ltd, the leading supplier of governance, risk, compliance and policy management solutions for non-government schools across Australia, recently opened a new office in Brisbane to better service clients, accommodate growth and access outstanding local talent with legal and education backgrounds.

The new office supports CompliSpace’s growth strategy and commitment to having local consultants available to all schools across Australia. It is centrally located, in Fortitude Valley.

“The decision to open an office in Brisbane makes sense because we’ve experienced 200% growth in Queensland in the past 12 months. Laws, regulations and best practices vary across the country, so we wanted to bring local talent into our group to leverage their Queensland expertise,” said CompliSpace Managing Director, James Field.

Robert Walker joins CompliSpace as State Manager, Queensland. Robert has over 20 years of extensive experience in business management, public policy, government relations, stakeholder management and community and media engagement. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland and is an admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Qld. Most recently, Robert held the role of Executive Manager and Company Secretary at the Presbyterian Schools Association (the PMSA), where pertinently, he was responsible for ensuring proper corporate governance within the PMSA and implementing a robust policy to deal with sexual abuse claims in line with the recommendations of the Royal Commission.

“Having worked with four prominent non-state schools, I have experienced firsthand the struggle that schools face to firstly deal with the complexity of remaining compliant and secondly to stay on top of ever changing legislative environment in which they operate. What attracted me to CompliSpace was how the products turn a very complex problem into a simple solution and ultimately allow both school boards and administrators to concentrate on doing what they do best – continuing to provide outstanding education outcomes for kids,” said Robert.

Helen Sloan joins Robert as a Consultant in the Queensland office. Helen has extensive teaching, training, management and leadership development and human resources experience in a range of multi-faceted organisations and industries in both the private and public sector.  After completing her Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University, Helen went on to complete Diploma of Education. After relocating to Queensland, Helen completed a Masters of Business Administration-Human Resources Management and a Bachelor of Law at Queensland University of Technology. Helen is an admitted solicitor at the Supreme Court of Queensland.  Prior to accepting the role with CompliSpace, Helen was working as a teacher at a number of schools including Redlands College and Faith Lutheran College.

Helen says, “As an educator with a legal background I recognised the critical need for schools to have a platform that allows them to be informed about all legal compliance issues and that CompliSpace offered the best product to fill that gap in the market.”
